A Bottle To Go; Taking Alcohol Home

At Posada Yum Kin Hotel in Tulum, Mexico we often discover after-the-fact that guests have purchased some of the area’s popular alcoholic beverages like Tequila and Kahlua to take home. These are often so much more affordable when purchased in Mexico, where they are made.

Buyer Beware!

BUT… many people are unaware when they buy their alcohol that they are saddling themselves with a great travel burden and setting themselves for a potential disaster. Why?

Enter the age of Airport Security.

Many people buy their alcohol expecting to carry it on the airplane. Plain and simple, if you have connecting flights to or through the U.S. then you are allowed to only carry it on the very first flight. As soon as you connect, liquids, a.k.a. alcohol need to move into your checked luggage or be forfeited. This leaves many people having to shuffle just after going through their stressful custom procedures. Repacking a bag on-the-fly is a nasty task: dirty clothes to sort through, glass bottles to add in with your souvenirs and how do you get it all in that bag that was full in the first place? One asks oneself, “was this really worth it?”

Still not convinced?

Okay, so I haven’t scared you off? Then, let me share a couple of tips to making the most of taking alcohol home.

1) Consider booking a direct flight. If you can avoid a connection, then you can carry bottles all the way.

2) Buy it at the airport –it will cost you less. Airport duty-free shopping and their bulk buying practices keep prices low. (But here again, you’ll have to plan ahead on how you will fit it safely into your luggage).

3) Bring 2-gallon Ziplock bags, put the bottle in and seal, pack around clothes in a hard-side piece of luggage, if possible.

And when you get home?

Enjoy! There’s nothing like recreating a cocktail recipe that you enjoyed while sitting near the pool at Posada Yum Kin!

5 Reasons to Start Planning Your Winter Vacation Now

Make the most of this year’s winter vacation by starting your planning now. With countless things to do and close proximity to the best activities, Tulum is quickly becoming the top place to stay in the Riviera Maya area. Of course, Posada Yum Kin is at the top of that short list. Why wait until everyone else is booking? They’ll only drive up prices and maybe even keep you from your favorite time slot.Suite Itzamna Living Room view

1) Get The Room You Want – Reserving ahead of time gives you first choice on staying in the suite you like best.

3) Shop Airfare – Getting the best airfare is always tricky. What we have found works best is setting up a Trip Advisor alert. Set it up and relax! You’ll get an email when prices drop, but don’t wait too long, others are booking now! Also, check with your favorite travel agent and ask about available charters in your area to Cancun. Sometimes they even have non-stop flights.

The Rich Culture of Xcaret -part two

When you travel, do you immerse yourself in the culture? What does that even mean to you? Eating a taco with a side of Guac? Or do you envision yourself, walking in the place of the ancient peoples that walked before you? Fantasizing about what things might have been like -way back in the day. Many of our guests at Posada Yum Kin are avid fans, if not experts, of history, archaeology and, of course, the rich culture of Mexico. One way to experience these ancient cultures is with a trip to Xcaret.

Xcaret is steeped in history. The grounds of Xcaret lie atop a Mayan archaeological site of the early port city of Ppole (918 AD) and became known as Xcaret in the late Post Classic Period (1400-1517 AD). Xcaret was known as a ceremonial center and Mayans from all over the Yucatan would visit to purify body and soul in the city’s scared wells. The ancient ruins of Xcaret feature 500 residential structures and over 60 temples, which are scattered throughout the surrounding jungle.

Mayan Village and Mexican Cemetery – This reconstructed Mayan village offers an opportunity to step into the past. Walk through replicas of Mayan houses built of wood and hemp and see the tools they used to produce their food and support their lives. A Mexican cemetery is integrated into the village as a tribute to Mexico’s popular “Day of the Dead” festivities.

Performances

Papantla Flying Men –The Flying Men, known as Voladores de Papantla can be seen within the park of Xcaret and represent a centuries-old tradition still alive in Mexico today. These men are from Totonacapan, located between Veracruz and Sierra Norte of Puebla. This ritual is dedicated to the solar deity and is believed to provide fertility and good harvest. Find this show near Área PLUS (site 39 on map) of Xcaret Park at 11:30am, 1:00pm & 3:00pm, a do-not-miss event!

The next is a performance done with a wheel of sorts. I’m not sure what the back story is, so if you know it -please share it with us in the comment section below.

Fiesta Charra in Xcaret

The strong influence of the Mayan culture is apparent throughout the Yucatan Peninsula. Often overlooked is the period of time that Mexico went through when Spaniards came in search of the riches of Mexico and the rich culture that has evolved right up to today.

At 5pm each evening, stop at the restaurant ‘La Cocina’ (site D on map) for the ‘Fiesta Charra show’ celebrating the Colonial period of Mexico; the period when Mexico earned its independence from Spain. Charros and cowboys display their acrobatic skills with their talented and experienced horsemanship of the Mexican charreria. Excaramuzas and Adelitas (cowgirls and Mexican women) take part with their beautiful outfits and entertaining choreographed routines.

See last week’s post for visitor details on Xcaret.

So Much To Do at Xcaret Park -Part One

Fountain at Xcaret Mexico

The eco-theme park, Xcaret (pronounced eesh-carette), which means ‘little inlet’ offers something for everyone. Located a little over a half hour drive north of Posada Yum Kin in Tulum, Xcaret is a great way to really FILL a day. In fact, a full day is sometimes not enough time to experience it all; from snorkeling in underground rivers, caves and cenotes to walking through the zoo that includes jaguars, monkeys and manatees to watching the evening show, Mexico Espectacular’, plan to be kept very busy while visiting Xcaret.

Xcaret Park

While snorkeling in Xcaret’s underground river, take in the unique rock formations and marine fossils. Explore this magical world while swimming from one end of Xcaret to the other -underground. You will pass through caves, which often offer little lighting. Consider this factor if taking small children on this excursion.

Xcaret Underground Snorkeling

Xcaret Wildlife Park -picture of a deer grazingThe cool waters are inviting during the summer heat, but when the cool fall and winter temperatures arrive it may become too cold for swimming; watch the forecast and plan accordingly. It will take approximately 45min. to 1 hour to swim through the river. Bring your own snorkel gear or rent them for a fee directly at Xcaret. At the end of your swim, you can rest in a hammock, swim in natural pools by the sea, or walk a bit further to a little creek with beautiful turquoise water and white sand.

Surrounding the area where you can swim with the Dolphins (for an additional fee), step onto the white sand beaches (#4 on site map) and take a dip in the gentle waters within the sheltered lagoon. Then walk on a path along the rocky coast to the incredible pools that create a Jacuzzi-like effect, filled with water fed directly from the ocean. Cool stuff!

Exhibits

Sea Turtles at Xcaret Mexico

Coral Reef Aquarium – A popular exhibit is the coral reef aquarium featuring local species and reefs in their natural habitat.

Regional Wildlife Zoo – Local species of deer, jaguars, pumas, manatees, tapirs, sea turtles, Howler monkeys and spider monkeys are interspersed throughout the park creating a zoo to enjoy as you walk through the park.
Butterfly Pavilion – Enter the world of the butterfly! This net-enclosed building holds some of the largest and most beautiful butterflies you will ever see.

Living Museum of Orchids – A brief stop here is all you need, unless you are a botanist. The Orchids are lovely and be sure to stop by the adjacent Mushroom Farm.

Orchids at Xcaret Mexico

As evening falls, do not miss the Mexico Espectacular! Plan ahead though this show last several hours and falls over the usual dinner period. Read further in our previous article here.

Details and more…

Other things to see within the park, and included in your ticket, are a tropical jungle trail, stained-glass plaza, the House of Whispers and a rotating scenic observation tower, which provides an excellent view of the area including Playa del Carmen.

The park is open all year long from 8:30 am to 9:30 pm. Parking is free. An ATM and public phones are available in the Main Plaza. Dressing rooms and showers are located within the park and require an additional charge or upscaled ticket. Buffet meals are served at various locations, review sites report that food quality is good, but prices are high (approx. $30 each). Dinner is available also during the evening performance, making it a timely choice. Xcaret packages are available, but include only one dinner and one beer, for a package for two.

Amazing Mayan Calendars

The Mayan culture is evident throughout the Yucatan. While visiting Posada Yum Kin in Tulum, you will find the Mayan gods and lifestyle portrayed in art and sculpture throughout the hotel and nearby area. Historians, anthropologists and archaeologists who find comfort at Posada Yum Kin, delight in the ‘old world’ atmosphere blended with ‘new world’ comfort.Posada Yum Kin Sign

The ancient Mayan culture was, for the most part, located from the Yucatan Peninsula to the Pacific Ocean. The Mayans originated in approximately the year 2000 BC and were dedicated to learning about astronomy and mathematics. From their discoveries in these areas they invented one of the most advanced numbering systems of all time. The Mayan people also devised their own system of hieroglyphic writing, and wrote about astronomy, history, their rulers and their rituals.

The Mayan priests devised the calendars.  The first calendar was called the Haab Year, or the Vague Year. This calendar was the most similar to our modern calendar. It consisted of eighteen months, 20 days each, and equaled a total of 360 days. This left approximately five days which were considered unlucky days around the New Year. The second calendar was called the Tzolkin, this calendar was considered sacred. It was made up of 20 months, 13 days in each, and a total of 260 total days. The reason for its existence is virtually unknown. The last calendar was the Long Count, which was largely an extension of the Haab. This calendar was the longest and dated back to 3113 BC. Even though the three calendars were very different they did have days that always matched up. It created a cycle that is referred to as the Calendar Round. This was used to help the Mayas plan and build their pyramids.

In many ways the Mayan counting system is considered superior to the Roman system of counting and writing numbers. It was unique because it used the value of zero and was based upon the number twenty. Instead of being written in horizontal columns, numbers were written in vertical columns. The Mayas also became experts in many aspects of astronomy with their intense study of the movement of the moon and the planets. They used this combined knowledge in mathematics and astronomy to devise the Haab calendar.

Getting Around In The Yucatan

Flying into Cancun? Renting your own car? Don’t be worried! Getting around in the Yucatan is easy. Going from Cancun to your hotel, Posada Yum Kin, in Tulum you will find that the roads are amazingly well-kept, even by International standards. Highway 307 leading south is a well-developed, four lane, divided highway that comes close to perfection. This busy route has recently added raised bypasses that limit cross traffic. These are placed in some of the larger cities along the way, like Playa del Carmen.

There are many full-service gas stations throughout the Yucatan, all or most accept credit cards and US dollars. We found the credit card was the better way to go and consistently gave the best exchange rate.

As you plan your excursions, reference this handy little driving chart to help you get gauge the time and distance between cities. Click on it to enlarge.

Driving Distances in Yucatan Mexico

So far, GPS devices simply do not work. If you plan on venturing off the beaten path, then you might want to do a little old fashioned homework at this government website. It’s great for determining additional driving distances and routes. Need further help with directions, just ask Julie. She’ll be happy to help!

Sunburn Relief -5 Tips That Help Ease The Pain

Sunburn. Ouch! Who wants to spend vacation with skin that feels like it’s on fire? So, my first suggestion is NOT to get sunburned in the first place. If you’re not from a southern climate that gets strong rays from the sun all year long, like that found in Tulum, you might need to learn to RESPECT THE SUN. It can catch up on you very quickly.

To best avoid sunburn, sightsee early in the morning or in the evening. This is easy when you are conveniently located just a few miles away at Posada Yum Kin. Our guests say that our location, so close to many of the best sights in Riviera Maya, is one of the things they like most about our Tulum hotel. Also, be sure to wear a hat and bring extra sunscreen that is not more than one year old. If you are visiting one of our many local Mayan ruins consider wearing a long sleeved, lightweight shirt .

'Sunburn' photo (c) 2006, Kelly Sue DeConnick - license: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0/

Okay, enough with the ‘prevention is worth a pound of cure’ philosophy. Most everyone will get sunburned from time to time. If you experience symptoms of chest pain, nausea, vomiting, flu or chills you should consult with a doctor. Untreated very severe sunburn can even result in death. Medications such as aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen are useful, especially when started early.

Here are 5 tips to bring topical relief of moderate sunburn:

Tip #1 – Clean and cool yourself

If you become sunburned, do not put on any type of cream without cooling yourself down first or you will ’lock in’ the heat lying under your skin. To cool down your skin, use cool compresses, stretch out in cold water in a tub, or stand under a cold shower for 5-10 minutes. Obviously, using a tub or shower is best; cooling the ‘core’ of your body helps restore your body’s defenses. But don’t stay in so long that your skin becomes waterlogged or that will promote over-dry skin.

Tip #2 – Vinegar and cold water solution

To alleviate the pain, prepare a solution of one-part vinegar and two-parts cold water. It’s also been suggested that equal parts of milk and water work as well. Either put in a spray bottle or apply gently with a soft cloth or sponge to all of your sunburned body parts. Let it air dry on your skin. Don’t worry, the smell goes away in about an hour or so. You can perform this treatment two or three times per day until your skin feels better. Do not rub with a towel or shave your skin at this point.

'Aloe Vera' photo (c) 2007, Tess Watson - license: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.0/

Tip #3 – Apply Aloe Vera

After your skin is dry, apply Aloe Vera. Directly from the plant is best, but if you don’t have a nearby Aloe Vera plant, like we do at Posada Yum Kin, then use a purchased gel that does not contain alcohol. Apply periodically throughout the day.

Tip #4 – Avoid skin care products with alcohol content and scents

Keep away from putting lotions or creams containing alcohol on your sunburn because they tend to dry out skin. Heavy creams can also lock the heat into your skin. Avoid perfumes and body washes that have scents as many of these contain alcohol as well.

Tip #5 – Apply Moisturizer

Find an after sun lotion that does not contain alcohol and hopefully contains a combination of Aloe Vera, vitamin E and shea butter. Apply it liberally and frequently until your skin feels moist and the pain has gone away. Applying after sun lotion will help keep your skin from peeling and may allow you to keep that tan a few weeks longer.

The remedies described above are personal suggestions, if the burn is extensive, you should consult your doctor immediately to avoid further complication.

5 Unforgettable Golf Courses near Posada Yum Kin in Tulum, Mexico

While staying at Posada Yum Kin, all suite, eco-friendly hotel in Tulum, visitors will find several great options for golf that are simply unmatched anywhere. Where else in the world could you walk among the Mayans while you take in a round of golf? Then after a beautiful day of golfing this challenging historic terrain, there is nothing better than dipping into our cool and refreshing pool and then sitting back with a cool drink.

While golf is not an indigenous sport to Mexico, it certainly has caught on in the Riviera Maya area. Jim Kerr at Worldgolf.com says that “Golf in Mexico has traditionally been a passion of the wealthy upper class, played on private courses located near large urban centers such as Mexico City, where the first golf club in the country opened in the suburb of San Pedro de los Pinos in 1905. It took tourism, specifically along the Pacific Coast and Baja Peninsula, to dramatically pick up the pace of course construction during the past 20 years.

When Cancun was launched, golf was a natural addition to the east coast as well, although the limestone terrain, marshy landscape, jungle foliage, salt water intrusion, heat and other elements presented challenges that only 20th century technology could feasibly and economically overcome. Indigenous ruins were another sensitive issue. The area is catacombed with Mayan excavations, burial centers, cenotes, and abandoned population sites. In keeping with Mexican tradition and conservation policies, courses were built around untouched ruins, incorporating the natural surroundings. This often means alligators, lizards and birds have the right-of-way, and their natural habitat of jungle and lagoons are part of the scenery.”

Golf course designers including Robert Trent Jones II, Greg Norman, Tom Fazio and Robert Von Hagge have taken up the challenge of designing spectacular golf courses under these rugged, and pristine conditions.  Here are five great courses you can hit while staying at Posada Yum Kin in Tulum.

Riviera Maya Golf ClubRiviera Maya Golf Course near Tulum

Riviera Maya Golf Course in Tulum is an impressive architectural project in which the designer Robert Trent Jones II has managed to create spectacular synergies between the 36-hole golf course and the luxuriant Mayan jungle, integrating natural lakes and cenotes (sink holes) within the rugged terrain. With eighteen holes cut deep into an ancient limestone quarry and fairways flowing along the natural contours of a jungle dense with mangroves and gum trees, limestone boulders piled at the edge like rubble swept aside by Maya Gods. More than a game it is an environmental experience.

This course is located 10 minutes north of Tulum. Greens Fees: $230.00 US Dollars, Twilight: $130.00. Rates include taxes, green fee, shared cart, snacks and beverages. This course offers food and beverage at the clubhouse and snacks along the course.

Puerto Aventuras

The Puerto Adventuras Golf Course is an exiting and challenging course. This beautiful 36-par jungle golf course was designed in 1991 by Thomas Leman and is still one of the best-kept secrets in the area. The fairways and greens are covered by a smooth carpet of Bermuda grass and surrounded by Palm trees, bougainvilleas, tropical fichus and lush foliage.

On your daily rounds you may encounter iguanas, deer and different species of tropical birds and other local fauna.

The Golf course opens every day year-round from 7:30 AM until dark. Golf Carts are not mandatory and no reservations are necessary. Tee Times are not needed to play but are recommended for groups larger than a 4 some.

This course is located 20 minutes north of Tulum. Greens Fees: $88.00 US Dollars  (18 holes W/ Electric Cart included) No Discount for Walking or Pull Carts.

PlayacarClub de Golf Playacar

Designed by Robert Von Hagge and opened in 1994, it’s a welcome and peaceful retreat from the bustle of “downtown” Playa. Tight, high-shouldered fairways weave through a Maya jungle mostly hidden from the few roads that traverse the zone. Laid out on a limestone plateau, it meanders around sinkholes, or “cenotes,” once used by the Maya to collect rainwater. More than 200 Mayan ruins have been incorporated into the layout. At 7,202 yards, with a slope rating of 14.8 from the blues, it’s arguably the toughest course in this part of the world and can often take five hours to play.

This course is located 30 minutes from Tulum and 5 minutes from the center of Playa del Carmen. Green Fees: $200 US Dollars per player and may require full or partial payment online. This course is an all-inclusive, which means that all food and beverages are included in prices.

El Camaleon Golf Club

In 2006, El Camaleón made history by becoming the first golf course to host an official PGA TOUR event in México and the first official PGA TOUR event ever held outside of the United States or Canada. The tournament will continue to be held annually at El Camaleón through 2012 and is broadcast exclusively on the GOLF CHANNEL. Designed by the legendary Greg Norman, the 7,000-yard layout is unique not just to Mexico, but to the entire golf world.

El Camaleón is aptly named for its diverse layout and ever-changing landscape, which bends through tropical jungles, dense mangroves and oceanfront stretches of sand with holes bordered by massive limestone canals. The indigenous and environmentally inspired design aspects are evident from the opening fairway, by an imposing cenote, an ancient underground cavern that was unearthed during the initial stages of course construction. El Camaleón is the only course in the Riviera Maya featuring two holes just steps from the Caribbean Sea.

While each hole shines with its own particular magic, it’s the par-3s that already are earning the loudest raves. Hole No. 15 will define the El Camaleón experience. At only 160 yards from the back marker the hole plays directly towards the vibrant waters of the Caribbean Sea. The large green sets the stage for a memorable shot as the nearby waves gently soothe the golfer’s soul. Don’t be fooled, this hole is not to be taken lightly, especially when the tropical winds pick up. Regardless of your score, the ocean view will remain with the player long after the round.

No. 7 also plays right to the edge of the Caribbean Sea with the sand and the spray punctuating the breeze. In the distance is one of the world’s largest coral reefs and the island of Cozumel. No. 10 is another short hole that is long on memories. The figure eight green is lined with drama. A shot too long or to the right drops deep into the crystal waters of the canal.

El Camaleón is located 40 minutes north of Tulum in the heart of the Riviera Maya region and about 10 minutes north of Playa del Carmen. Green Fees: $150 US Dollars per player.

Cozumel Country Club

The Island of Cozumel has long been known for world class diving, beaches and fun in the sun. Now you can add world-class golf to that list. Since its opening in 2001, Cozumel Country Club, designed by the Nicklaus Design Group, has been steadily attracting travelers to Cozumel. This golf course has been carefully crafted from the surrounding mangrove marshlands and tropical rainforest to preserve its environmental integrity, as well as providing attractive challenges for players of every skill level.

The Nicklaus Design Group has successfully balanced the strict requirements of building a first-class golf course with a commitment to preserving the delicate ecosystem of the area. In March 2006 Cozumel Country Club became the first golf course in Mexico to earn the designation of Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary from Audubon International by demonstrating that they are maintaining a high degree of environmental quality in a number of areas including Environmental Planning, Wildlife & Habitat Management, Outreach and Education, Chemical Use Reduction and Safety, Water Conservation, and Water Quality Management.

You’ll need to take the ferry out of Playa del Carmen, 30-40 minutes north of Tulum, which makes the 30-minute crossing to Cozumel numerous times daily, costs $9 one-way and is an easy daytrip for golfers headed for the Nicklaus-designed Cozumel Country Club. Green Fees: $135.00, Rates include green fee, taxes, and shared golf cart.
